Preventative Care

The problem:

If a child is neglecting his or her at-home dental care, it can lead to serious dental problems down the road. Unfortunately, this can also hurt the child’s confidence and the parents’ wallets.

Our solution:

As your dentist in Boiling Springs, the iGrin team has an extreme focus on preventative dentistry. We can solve a lot of dental issues before they pose as bigger problems. Additionally, we use the most conservative approach. In turn, this leads to happier and healthier smiles. What can you expect?

  • Thorough Exam

We strive to make every visit a pleasant experience for you and your child. A comprehensive exam allows us to evaluate your children’s current oral and overall health. This exam includes taking full x-rays, determining their risk for periodontal disease and tooth decay, and evaluating their bite and jaw alignment. We’ll also discuss with you habits, diets, and dental health to create a plan of action.

  • Cleanings

After our thorough exam, our friendly hygienists will perform an easy cleaning to remove tartar, plaque, deposits, and any stains from your child’s teeth. We use modern technologies to ensure your child is comfortable and at ease throughout the entire process.

  • Digital X-Rays

Full digital x-rays will be taken during the exam for proper diagnosis. We’ll be able to spot and treat problems that tend to go unnoticed with the naked eye.

Are digital x-rays safe? Absolutely! Thanks to the advancements in technology, digital x-rays reduce radiation exposure by 90%.

  • At-Home Care

During your exam, we’ll provide tips and tricks for your child’s at-home care routine. We highly encourage everyone (including parents!) to brush, floss, and use mouthwash every single day.

Brushing: brush your teeth every morning and night for optimal results. To properly brush your teeth, be sure to:

    • Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle along the gum line
    • Move the toothbrush in a circular motion for each tooth
    • Do this motion for the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth
    • Brush gently. Brushing too hard may lead to gum recession
    • Brush your tongue to remove odor bacteria

Flossing: flossing takes care of the 30% of your mouth that brushing may have missed. To properly floss your teeth, be sure to:

    • Use about 18-24 inches of dental floss
    • Wrap the ends of the floss around your middle and index fingers
    • Move the floss back and forth between each tooth in a C shape

Mouthwash: be sure to use alcohol-free mouthwash to combat bad breath and give your mouth that extra cleanliness. We also recommend using ADA-approved mouthwash for optimal results.

Composite Fillings

A teenager boy wearing glasses and smiling.

The problem:

There may be a time when your child has a cavity. Sometimes tooth decay becomes severe enough that a filling is required to stop the problem from worsening.

Our solution:

For hundreds of years, fillings have always been the go-to for treating cavities. We’re able to use metal-free fillings, which preserve your child’s tooth structure and blend seamlessly with his or her smile.

  • Advantages

Since our fillings are tooth colored, they will closely match with your child’s tooth color. Also, it requires less removal of natural tooth structure, saving the integrity of the tooth.

  • Disadvantages

Metal-free fillings still require some removal of the natural tooth to stop the cavity from growing. Don’t worry! We’ll do everything in our power to ensure your child is comfortable throughout the entire treatment.

‘‘I have been going to ProGrin Dental for years. When they opened iGrin Pediatric Dentistry, I decided to take my children there for their dental appointments. I’m so glad I made that decision because it makes things so much more convenient for us. I’ve always recommended ProGrin to my friends, and now I recommend iGrin as well!’’

Sedation Dentistry

Young boy smiling

The problem:

It doesn’t hurt our feelings – some people are fearful of the dentist. As a result, some children – and even adults – avoid getting the dental care they need unless it’s an absolute emergency. In turn, this can cause devastating effects on your child’s oral and overall health.

Our solution:

Sedation dentistry can ease dental anxiety by helping your child feel relaxed and taking his or her mind off the tasks at hand.

We offer:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) at both iGrin locations
  • Advantages

Sedation dentistry is safe and effective. It has helped countless children – and adults – overcome dental anxiety to receive the dental care they need and deserve.

With nitrous oxide, your child will breathe through a mask and feel at ease immediately. He or she may not even remember the appointment. We’re able to control the amount of gas your child intakes, and it will wear off quickly.

For patients with dental fear or in need of multiple treatments, oral sedation and general anesthesia may be more suitable. Oral sedation and general anesthesia are administered by our highly trained Powdersville dental team, who will closely monitor your child throughout the appointment.

To see if sedation dentistry is right for your child, contact us today!

  • Disadvantages

Nitrous oxide may not be suitable for children who have extreme dental fear. In this case, oral sedation or general anesthesia may be more effective.

The effects of oral sedation are not immediate, unlike nitrous oxide and general anesthesia. Additionally, sedation dentistry is not a substitute for local anesthesia.

Rest assured, we want your child to have the perfect kiddo experience. We will work with you to find a sedation method or treatment plan that works best for your child.

Space Maintainers

Young girl brushing her teeth

The problem:

Life is unpredictable. There may be a case where a child loses a baby tooth early or extracted because of dental decay. It’s important to leave that gap open so the permanent tooth can erupt and come into place.

Our solution:

A space maintainer is an appliance that can help those permanent teeth come in properly. It can either be removable or cemented into the child’s mouth. We’ll gladly review with you and your child how to clean it properly to ensure optimal oral health.

  • Advantages

Space maintainers allow permanent teeth to come into place. Without it, the child’s teeth can shift into the open space, disrupting the permanent tooth’s placement. This could lead to future orthodontic treatment.

  • Disadvantages

The child may feel discomfort when the space maintainer is placed. It takes a few days for the child to get accustomed to wearing the appliance.

Baby Root Canal (Pulpotomy)

Young boy wearing a blue shirt

The problem:

When a cavity is deep enough to infect the tooth nerve, a baby root canal (also known as a pulpotomy) is needed to save the tooth. Without this treatment, an extraction may be required.

Our solution:

A baby root canal maintains the integrity and health of a baby tooth, gum tissue, and bone. This process is necessary to sustain the health and development of adult teeth.

  • Advantages

This treatment is the last resort to saving a baby tooth to ensure the proper growth of permanent teeth.

  • Disadvantages

The child may have some soreness and discomfort after the treatment. However, it will subside and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Dental Crowns

Young teenager boy wearing a blue shirt

The problem:

If not caught early, a cavity could be devastating to a child’s tooth structure, causing severe decay. As a result, a filling won’t be enough to save the tooth.

Our solution:

Our dental crowns are capable of stopping tooth decay and restoring your child’s tooth back to full function and strength. We work closely with our dental lab to ensure the crown is a precise fit and blends with your child’s smile.

  • Advantages

Crowns are an excellent solution to save a severely decayed tooth. It will restore the tooth back to its full function and strength. Plus, we can blend the crown with the smile, so hardly anyone will know you received treatment.

  • Disadvantages

While crowns are strong and stable, it is still crucial to maintain excellent dental care. They will not protect your child’s smile from gum disease.

Extractions

A teenager girl wearing a blue hoodie

The problem:

There may be many reasons a child will need a tooth extraction. Some possibilities could include: the tooth is beyond damaged and decayed, the need to remove wisdom teeth, or need to make room for orthodontic treatment.

Our solution:

No matter the reason, we promise to make sure your child’s treatment is beyond comfortable. We offer amenities, such as movies and nitrous oxide, to help your child forget he or she is even at the dentist.

  • Advantages

While pulling a tooth out may seem scary, it will benefit your child in the long run. We even have solutions you can pursue after the extraction – ask us the next time you visit us!

  • Disadvantages

An extraction will remove a tooth from the mouth, leaving a gap. There are solutions we can pursue to help your child receive the best smile he or she will be proud of.
